Competition can sharpen focus and bring out effort, but for many young athletes it also stirs fear, pressure, and self-doubt. A child who suddenly complains of a stomachache, becomes unusually quiet, or melts down over small mistakes may not be unprepared or unmotivated; they may be overwhelmed. Addressing anxiety before competitions requires more than a pep talk. It calls for calm observation, emotional safety, and practical support that helps the athlete feel steady, capable, and understood.
